Ngorongoro Crater is the highlight of the Ngorongoro Conservation area, a world heritage site located 180km west of Arusha. The crater itself is the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera, offers people access to "the unparalleled beauty of one of the world's most unchanged wildlife sanctuaries", according to a local government brochure.

At 610 meters (2000 feet) deep, and covering an expanse that measures 260 square kilometers (100 square miles), this world famous crater is a natural enclose that is perfectly suited to host wildlife in numbers that are guaranteed to impress you. In fact, approximately 25,000 large animals are known to live in the crater, including the very rare black rhinoceros. More commonly seen are African buffalo, hippopotamuses, wildebeest, Grant’s zebra, common eland, and Grant’s and Thomson’s Gazelles.

In the southwest area of the crater lies Lake Magadi, which is usually decorated with thousands of mainly lesser flamingoes.

Perhaps more exciting for safari goers is the fact that the crater proudly boasts one of the densest populations of Masai lions; in 2001 the recorded number of lions were 62.

With the backdrop of Mount Meru, a prominent volcano only second to Kilimanjaro, Arusha National Park provides the perfect scenery for an unforgettable safari. This small park has varied scenery, allowing you to experience different landscapes of Africa in a short time. The Meru Crater in the west provides access to the Jekukumia River, with the peak of Mount Meru on its rim. For grassland scenery, visit the Ngurdoto crater in the south east. Finally, in the north-east, you can find the shallow Momella lakes known for the wading birds (flamingoes) among the variously colored algae.

Although it can’t quite boast the same game-viewing experience famous in other Tanzanian national parks, Arusha National Park is still quite a densely-packed park sure to provide glimpses into many exotic animals. Giraffe, Cape buffalo, zebra, warthog, the black-and-white colobus monkey, the blue monkey, flamingo, elephant, lion and many other African animals, make appearances here. For bird lovers, it is a must-visit location; Narina Trogon and bar-tailed trogon have been spotted, and many starling species also can visit the park.

As far as lakes go, the one proclaimed to be "the loveliest I had seen in Africa" by Ernest Hemingway is none other than Lake Manyara. The 50km circuit along the base of the Rift valley escarpment provides the surroundings for an ideal Tanzanian safari experience.

Upon entering the gates, as you drive through the dense jungle, expect to see baboons numbering in the hundreds, blue monkeys watching in the mahogany trees, amidst bushbucks and forest hornbills. As you continue your journey, you may find buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, giraffes, lions, and elephants. It's all here in Manyara.

Boasting several different landscapes, Manyara is a must-see safari expedition. From the grassy floodplains to an alkaline lake, volcanic peaks that jut dramatically from the Maasai steppes, your camera will be tested as you relentlessly fire shot after shot. In addition to the wildlife mentioned above, you can see groups of banded mongoose and Kirk’s dik-dik among the acacia trees, foraging for vegetation.

For bird lovers, Manyara is perfect. More than 400 species have been recorded at the park, and it isn’t unreasonable to expect to see a quarter of those in just one day. At the very least, the pink flamingos will be very hard o miss, as they choose Manyara as a stop on their perpetual migration. They share the waters with pelicans, cormorants, and storks.
